Dayton Children's Hospital Experience
Dayton children's is the hospital we were fist sent to following the initial grand mal seizure. The time we spent on the ER at first was very stressful. We didn't know what was going on or what to expect. Honestly it didn't help that they kept questioning us if she had ingested anything. They also did their best which I appreciate now trying to brush it off as something as simple as an infection or electrolyte imbalance. However, as her mother I knew that she had been healthy and I certainly didn't think she was dehydrated. At the same time I was hoping it was an electrolyte imbalance!
When the initial blood game back showing no issues the medical team there began to did uses discharge and follow up. I was shocked. I just witness my daughter go from completely normal to having a full blown fully body seizure with issues with breathing. I wanted answers and I wanted them before we went home. They got an iv started after attempting with five people!!! Before they bothered to even call in iv therapy to come in. So lesson learned there for sure! To spare you a very long story I will tell you I had to demand and threaten that if we are sent home and she has any complication I would not hesitate to talk to a lawyer. |
To make a long story short she had an EEG, a CT scan, and then an EMU study. The EMU study showed abnormal seizure like activity. After this they didn't want to do any further tests and they didn't want to even start medication. I was so astonished that they wanted us to follow up about medication and to get an MRI. I was not happy I made several calls including our insurance, another hospital and I spoke with the unit manager. I couldn't believe they wanted to dc her not knowing why she is having these seizures. I also couldn't wrap my head around the fact that we had a good iv and that they wanted us to come back and go through that process all over again!
Needless to say a few calls and pleading she had her first MRI. That's when I got a huge apology from several doctors and we got the news that they saw something on the MRI and she needed to have another one tomorrow with contrast. So the next day we had another one. From there we saw neurosurgery at Dayton children's.
The neurosurgeon in a nutshell explained her condition and what they typically do as far as further tests and what to expect as far as treatment. But... He admitted he was not the proper doctor for her that she needed to see a team of doctors and sent us to the Cleveland clinic.

Cleveland Clinic Neuro-Vascular Clinic Experience
We went to the Cleveland clinic with very high expectations. When you think about going to a nationally ranked hospital with ideas that the best doctors work there you get a sense of well... That these doctors are perfect! That they know best and they are the best for her condition. However, this is not true. Boy is it so false. Doctors are not perfect. They are human and what they do is an art. Some are just better than others. Some we'll know more about certain conditions. It's the same for hospitals too. At the Cleveland clinic they basically painted us this fairy tale thing that Alexis was fine, stable and well she didn't really need monitored all that closely and certainly didn't need any treatment anytime soon. Then they scared the living daylights out of us! They basically told us that they wouldn't really do anything for her unless she started having developmental delays or had a stroke/ brain bleed. They also said other things that we later found out was not true. So we went home my husband feeling reassured that this is not a big deal and I a nervous and well defeated wreck. |
Cincinnati Neuro-Vascular Clinic ExperienceThis is where we call home for her care now. We love our team of doctors. I'm so thankful for Alexis's ENT doctor because his good friend and neighbor so happens to work out of this clinic! On our initial consult this doctor listened to me explain her conditions downer we had been through and said to me that we need to consider having a team of doctors closer to home know her and follow her just in case. He also said that this clinic does amazing things and thought a second opinion was a good idea. So I thought this was a great idea.
After some convincing my husband I booked the first appointment. We have been here ever since. This hospital is truly amazing and we would make the drive here even in the middle of the night for strep throat visit if we needed to! |
